But first, what is an ID Pen?

An ID Pen is a pen or marker that has a clear invisible ink that is used to mark items covertly.

    • Q: Can you explain the whole concept of the “id pen licensing deal”?
    • A: When you see Mickey Mouse on a lunchbox or the Fremantle Dockers’ logo on a tee shirt, the manufacturers of the lunchboxes and tee shirts paid Licensing Fees (plus, usually, royalties) to use the cartoon or logo.

      Licensing Fees (and often, on-going royalties) are typically attached to all forms of “intellectual properties” like brand names, logos, images.

      The Licensee, the person or company paying the Licensing Fee for the specified Use Rights does so for a variety of reasons and benefits, such as brand name or logo recognition, a shortcut to the product, and saving from having to use advertising to build a new identity from scratch. For example, a company choosing to publish a diet, health and exercise magazine chooses to pay a License Fee to use the Weight Watchers name and trademark rather than create a new name of its own because they believe this will be a less costly shortcut.
